The Background
Constructing an Olympic-level sports infrastructure capable of hosting international FIFA events requires materials that transcend basic durability. The contractor for the Suzhou Olympic Sport Centre approached us with a stringent mandate: to engineer a FIFA Quality Pro and HIG Grade sports surface. Beyond standard biomechanical requirements, the facility demanded a surface that would maintain its structural integrity, safety metrics, and pristine aesthetic under intense, prolonged UV exposure.
The Challenge
Engineering a surface for this caliber of venue often exposes the limitations of conventional materials. Competitor solutions typically fail in two distinct areas:
▪ Aromatic Binder Degradation & Yellowing: Many standard polyurethane binders are aromatic. Under harsh UV rays, they rapidly yellow, turning vibrant track colors muddy, while simultaneously degrading the tensile strength and causing the surface to fail rigorous HIC (Head Injury Criterion) tests.
▪ Surface Inconsistency: Variations in granule sizing within the industry often lead to a porous, uneven surface matrix, compromising the overall density and biomechanical performance required for high-level athletic use.
The FieldsMaster Solution
To achieve the uncompromising HIG Quality mandated by the Olympic center, our engineering team deployed a highly specialized, UV-resilient material strategy.
The definitive technological advantage in this project was the use of FieldsMaster FM-PU 1185, a premium aliphatic polyurethane binder. Unlike common aromatic alternatives, aliphatic binders possess a chemical structure that renders them fundamentally highly resistant to UV degradation and yellowing.
This ensured that the bright surface colors remained vibrant. More importantly, the aliphatic FM-PU 1185 maintained superior elongation and tensile strength over time, preserving the shock-absorbing properties required to consistently pass comprehensive HIC reporting and SGS testing protocols.
Engineered Surface Density: 1-3.5mm EPDM
To ensure maximum surface consistency, we strictly supplied our standardized 1-3.5mm EPDM granules. Based on extensive manufacturing feedback and installation data, we have optimized this specific size ratio. The 1-3.5mm specification allows the granules to pack tightly and uniformly during installation, resulting in a flatter, denser, and biomechanically superior surface compared to broader industry averages.
Factory-Direct Physical Mixing (Mix Color)
To meet the specific, vibrant visual identity of the stadium without compromising UV resistance, we utilized our proprietary Mix Color process. Instead of relying on lab-based chemical dyeing which can fade, we perform precise physical mixing of pre-colored raw granules directly at our factory. This guarantees absolute color uniformity, enhances UV resistance for sun-exposed areas, and provides highly flexible, factory-direct order fulfillment.
The Result
The integration of our FM-PU 1185 aliphatic binder and precisely sized EPDM granules resulted in an immaculate installation. The surface cleared all SGS laboratory tests and FIFA field tests on the first attempt, backed by comprehensive HIC reporting and independent testing videos.
