Transforming an American School Playground in Saudi Arabia: A Seamless EPDM Surfacing Project

Traditional rubber tiles lack design plasticity, making it impossible to create custom, continuous campus graphics. More importantly, in environments like Saudi Arabia where surface temperatures can soar, prefabricated tiles are prone to severe thermal expansion and contraction. Over time, this leads to seam warping, creating tripping hazards and allowing dust and sand to accumulate. Furthermore, utilizing standard adhesives in such extreme heat often results in rapid degradation of tensile strength, causing the surface to harden, lose its shock attenuation capabilities, and experience severe granule loss (raveling).

We selected our HIG (High Intensity Grade) EPDM granules paired with the FM-1185 High-Performance PU Binder. Formulated specifically for high-temperature stability, this binder maintains superior elongation and adhesion under the Saudi sun, ensuring the surface remains resilient and completely immune to premature raveling.

Leveraging the seamless nature of the PIP system, we executed a vibrant red and blue color scheme that perfectly mirrored the American flag. This highly customized graphic design transformed the playground from a simple functional area into a core visual representation of the school's cultural identity.

Safety is non-negotiable in educational facilities. Relying on our extensive Head Injury Criterion (HIC) testing data, we scientifically calculated the optimal thickness ratio between the SBR base layer and the EPDM top layer based on the playground equipment's specific fall heights. This data-driven approach ensured full compliance with international safety standards while eliminating redundant material usage—providing the client with the most cost-effective budget possible.
